I'm anxious to hear the result - though not as excited as I would be had it been an album of arias/operatic theme. I like parts of the Opium album but it's not my favourite. But then the string quartet arrangements will be something different than just piano and voice, so maybe I'll prefer this one? I don't know....

Here is the promotion video. What do you think? I think this is a huge improvement on Opium but I may be just pregudiced.

I agree with you "temp". His voice has matured considerably since then. He's also a lot surer of himself and what he want, and I think you can hear that also. This has become his most personal project to date and I am really looking forward to hear the whole album. What we see in the video is really convincing. I've heard bits and pieces of some of the rest and I think we really are in for a treat! "Fifi" is like a vintage french redwine. He's just getting better every time we get a new recording. He's a serious worker and a unbelievable interpreter. Another thing is his collaboration with Jérôme Ducros. They're a fantastic team together, and so is he also with Quatóur Ebène. - I very much look forward to this, yes! The spring will be really green this year...

I love the new Forum masthead picture - divinely decadent and a bit Oscar-ish!   Coincidentally, David Daniels is playing Oscar Wilde in a new opera - so fin de siècle decadence appears to be "in" ...

Mr. Bendo,

Bosie was played by a dancer, so yes, I guess that is he ...

Hmm, re Verlaine the opera - any ideas for the important rôle of Rimbaud??

M-m Artemis,

I already made me some thoughts about the cast of Rimbaud... a gentle tenor, perhaps ? Because a boy- soprano may be understood wrong in this place. censored
Or, in the best tradition of Baroque, a breeches- role ? Quite cheeky, no ? wink

Sorry, Mr. Bendo - I know you have already set your heart on the distribution but I tend to see it the other way around - I see Verlaine as a tenor (an Ian Bostridge-style voice would be good) and Rimbaud as a countertenor. The long-suffering Mme Verlaine would, of course, be a mezzo! wink

Artemis
drinks
I also would prefer a tenor as Verlaine. And a countertenor for Rimbaud. I prefer Rimbaud as a poet, so he should be sung by Philippe. But I guess, Monsieur himself has different taste and would not accept this cast. think

Quote :
A note from Philippe Jaroussky on his new album Green:

"Why should a countertenor not have the necessary sensitivity and vocal technique to perform French mélodies? This repertoire has always been a secret passion of mine and following an earlier recording, Opium, I decided to put together a second and more ambitious program around the poetry of Paul Verlaine, the French poet most frequently set to music.

"The choice of songs was huge and I wanted to concentrate primarily on the better-known poems and offer several settings of the same text – both the well-known settings by Fauré, Debussy and Hahn, as well as hidden gems by the likes of Poldowski, Bordes and Szulc. I very soon realised that including a few chansons would be an obvious way to show just how many composers Verlaine has inspired in a large variety of periods and that he is still a source of inspiration today.

"For many years I have also wanted to make a recording with the Ebène Quartet, having a great admiration for their originality, the rigour of their musical approach and their open-mindedness. With a couple of exceptions this meant making transcriptions and my thanks go to Jérôme Ducros, my recital partner of many years standing, for taking on this difficult job which has allowed us to offer the listener a new version of Debussy’s Fêtes galantes I.

"I hope that this voyage through the world of Verlaine proves as attractive as it is surprising." –Philippe Jaroussky

Green was reviewed on BBC Raio3 CD Review today (4 April). Although it was short, the reviewer made a lot of nice comments.

Thanks, Mon! I have dutifully voted for Philippe but it was a difficult choice as I really love Ann Hallenberg's "Agrippina" CD as well. think
