I´m just back again...it was overwhelming, expressive and very special performance - Philippe sung for the people, who really believe...who repeated for themselves all these "Amen", "Laudate" and "Stabat Mater" in the morning Mass. It was incredible. Incredible.
His "Paradisi" sounded really angelic, but even like sung by one pure boy- soprano in the Chapell, very convinced and happy. Stunning .

I´ll write more, a bit later! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

"Easter Saturday: Jaroussky and L’Arpeggiata, that is
baroque with a jazzy feeling."

Sunday, 4 Arpil 2010

Quote :
Cheers, shouts, whistles and... three encores. That is how the
concert at the festival of famous French musicians ended, with
L’Arpeggiata and the counter-tenor of “an angelic voice and devilish
virtuosity” – Phillipe Jaroussky. With their colourful programme, Teatro
Amore, full of jazz improvisations, the artists won the hearts of the
festival’s audience, which simply went crazy with admiration.

The concert was special in every way. It took place in over one hundred
metres below the ground in the unique setting of St. Kinga’s Chapel in
the Salt Mine in Wieliczka, famous for its fantastic acoustics.
Furthermore, the group of musicians of Christina Pluhar – the virtuoso
of the baroque harp and teorbo, performed at the festival for the first
time, but accompanying the most scrambled for counter-tenor today by
concert halls – Jaroussky. L’Arpeggiata is known for uniquely energetic
interpretations of music from the baroque and combining it with other
modern genres. The group has been awarded many times with prestigious
awards, in this Cannes Classical Awards 2004 for the recording
Tarantella with music of South Italy; has cooperated with the best
soloists – vocalists and instrumentalists. Recently it recorded an album
Los Impossibles with the King’s Singers, and Teatro d’Amore
with Philippe Jarousski (2008). And it was the latter programme that
the artists presented at the festival. L’Arpeggiata playing with a jazzy
drive, in combination with the almost swinging voice of Jaroussky
brought about surprising colour effects! The most unsuspected probably
in the arias and psalms of Claudio Monteverdi. Jaroussky's voice full of
lyricism in the lullaby Oblivion Soave from Arnalta’s part, the
nurse of the leading character of the composer's historical opera The
Coronation of Poppea, changed tones from piece to piece. He entertained
with bewitching melodies in the song of the unfulfilled lover, Ohimèch’io
cado
(Oh, I’m falling) composed in the form of a scherzo, truly
moved and saddened in the lament of the Venetian composer Barbara
Strozzi, full of dissonances and neck-breaking coloraturas and interval
leaps.

In the programme Teatro Amore (Lovable Theatre), the XVII-century
secular repertoire fluently transformed into a sacred one, as in those
times music connected the two worlds more than it divided them.
Therefore, the religious cantata found itself in the concert of the
theorba’s virtuoso, poet and composer of operas – Benedetto Ferrari’s Queste
pungenti spine
(Those sharp thorns). The composition full of
baroque rhetoric, referring to the opera lament, was written to the
affected text presenting the personification of the sinner’s soul
experiences Christ’s suffering. Jaroussky’s interpretation sounded
incredibly moving, similarly to Giovanni Felice Sances' lament from the
sequence Stabat Mater dolorosa (The Mournful Mother stood) with a
recitative fluently transforming into an arioso, then an aria of an
artistic melody line. The vocal parts of Jaroussky’s L’Arpeggiata
consisting of original instruments (psalterium, archlute, baroque
guitar, chitarra battente, violins, harpsichord, music box, percussion
instruments and zink) alternated improvisations and short instrumental
pieces, among others by Maurizi Cazatti and Andrei Falconieri. Among
them there was also Girolamo Kapsberger’s famous piece Toccata
arpeggiata, from which the group took its name in the virtuosic
performance of Christina Pluhar. A modern composition of the guitar
player from the group Marcello Vitale was also found in the programme,
not straying stylistically from the entire programme, but giving it
virtues of a jazz improvisation.

However, the greatest emotions were caused by the artists together with
Phillipe Jaroussky. It is real pleasure to listen to how this singer
excellently and perfectly operates with his voice – all those unique
pianos, mezzovoce and effortlessly overcoming coloraturas, requiring the
greatest skill. This artist has an amazing connection with the
audience, with whom he does whatever he wants – he can both move, as
well as amuse them to tears. That is what happened during the concert on
Saturday. After cheers and standing ovations, there were encores, in
which the entire jazzy feeling and sense of humour of the artists
revealed itself. Doron Sherwin, until now dialoguing with Jaroussky on
the zink, this time tried to take over the humorous aria Ohimèch’io
cado
, unexpectedly joining in to sing. Holding the instrument like a
microphone or with a handkerchief in the hand a la Pavarotti, he tried
to defeat the master vocally. Nothing of it – Jaroussky gave everything
he had – he doubled and tripled, swung, wailed and improvised even...
with the bass, in order to win over the audience to his side. Once he
was successful, at the words Il Paradisio (Paradise) with a
triumphant gesture he put on his sunglasses. The audience went crazy in
admiration, clapping, stamping, whistling – cheering on the artists in
every way possible.

Misteria Paschalia - underground musings in the Holy Saturday.

Misteria Paschalia once again has arrived to the St.Kinga's Chapel. On Holy Saturday, April 3, among the salt, has appeared L'Arpeggiata group, led by Christina Pulhar and a excellent singer Philippe Jaroussky.
For lovers of old music, artists prepared a real feast. The underground concert consisted of the religious and secular works of Italian seventeenth-century masters.Baroque repertoire, wonderfully emphasized the character of Holy Saturday - of both the full Lenten reflection and joyful expectation of the Resurrection on Sunday.
So far, within the framework the Misteria Paschalia festival gave concerts : French ensemble Doulce Mémoire (2006),also from France - famous group Le Concert Spirituel with charismatic Hervé Niquet (2007),French group of Le Poème Harmonique (2008),and neapolitan's Cappella della Pietà de’ Turchini under the command of Antonio Florio (2009).

One review more even!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

By the way - I attended also the Händel - concert "La Resurrezione " the next day.
And, though all the soloists were excellent, especially M. De Liso, R.
Invernizzi and very handsome Luca Pisaroni as an charismatic
Lucifer , it was just like a pale copy of an great picture. I
don´t know, what happened to some musicians of the famous "Il
Giardino Armonico" , but all the recitativs were supported very
unclear and almost afraid. Just the tutti sounded quite convincing .

I also could not be there and I regret it so much... depressed
and indeed the idea of a concert 327 meters underground of the 'salty' atmosphere was quite original! good
p.s.I have this avatar for a long time, i love all Caravaggio's works and this is one of my favorite wink

What's going on musically with this years' Easter? Or is he out looking for eggs in the garden like the rest of us?

(Can some forummer from Paris sneak to his house and hide a few chocolate eggs in the backyard on saturdaynight? Just throw 'em over the wall or the hedge, or something. (Do NOT break in and enter!) I would DIE to see his face on sundaymorning! "WTF is that? An easter egg? Well, what do you know, there's another one. And another one! YES! Egghunt!!!!!")

I've surprised many a colleague with an egghunt for Easter in all the places I've worked. And to this day they do not know who hid them, because I always lie and join in the search [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Well, the thought is funny, but he'd probably be totally spooked by it. Wouldn't you?

But I am going to surprise SOME people with an unexpected egghunt this year. smile You should see all these grown ups with a child's grin form ear to ear looking in the strangest places and then al happy as they bring in their treasures.
