rikkapijemy,
yes, and this critic is not convinced he is going to manage the role (if I got that right). But as she also mentions his "angel's voice" again she perhaps just missed his development during the past years...and she surely doesn't know the Dalbavie Sonnets, where he sometimes sounds like an alien, frightening and fascinating at the same time. As far as I know he is able to give his voice every emotional colour, so why shouldn't he be able to play the role of a depressed, choleric, genius man ? Torn and tormented, even mad somehow. I'm eager so see and hear it. I'm sure he is going to shock me again.

It seems to me the critique has read and heard material given to her by the composer, and now is referring to the music as a bit "contorsionée", that is: very difficult lines, I guess, especially if it is contrapuntal?
I don´t understand what she is trying to convey about the other opera. Maybe PhJ wanted to sing in that but then didn´t find time? So nice if someone is able to really say what they are trying to say...

P has to prove nothing more.
s During interviews, he said to have accepted the role of Caravaggio because he wanted to play other thing than eternal kind, the ideal son-in-law. He knows perfectly his limits. Then let us make he trust.

I fear that Caravaggio from Suzanne Giraud will be heavy.
May much blood — tragedy — darkness — I hope not to much "black".

The live of Caravaggio is colourful too.
Paintings are the mirrow of the soul.
You will also find light, innocence, joke, ironie in the paintings of Caravaggio.

The balance of tragedy and happiness is a difficult challenge to represent.
The interaction between both design variants will be exciting.

To be successfull, the audience will need emotion in the dark moments...
but also "fresh air" to have a moment of recovery.
no ... and ... Very Happy

Exciting. smile

Astarto,
to say what you mean implies to know what you are talking about... in case of this critic, I'm not convinced. Calling Philippe's voice "artificial, but caressing, sometimes mannered" Ouch. "The voice won't be covered by the orchestra" Oooh, what a threatening imagination! He will be heard, clear, tragic, sharp, perhaps shocking, but we will hear him. (That's why I go there....just let go, Philippe!!) Sorry, PJ. It had to be said.

rikkapijemy,
you're right. And there are much more facets inside this man. He'll do a great job.

Duffy, I couldn´t agree more. But I hope she was referring just to Giraud´s composition and the role of Caravaggio with the word "mannered"; otherwise it would really show that she is not competent to write about PhJ.

Duffy, Astarto, Joanna et al, what I understood from the program it will be a version concerte not fully staged, right? think I cannot imagine how they will represent such a visual feast for the senses as Caravaggio without all the props, but of course there are colors in the voices too.
Thanks for the information and previews!!! Unfortunately in the US they do not pay too much attention so I am dependent on your comments! sad

I fear they don't even pay attention to it in Paris....it seems as if there is still a focus on the capital in France, I thought that might have changed nowadays.
Up to now I don't know how they'll do it, perhaps like Faramondo with projections?

The action of "Caravaggio" should focus on his later years only.
The characters in the opera by Giraud appears near the end of the novel by Fernández, unless the composer has changed history.
But none of this is important because FELIPE SING! Laughing
And that means he will transform the opera into something of his, and Giraud and Fernandez are just the pretext. I'm sure. yes

In December at the Masterclass in Metz, I asked PJ which language he will sing.
He said he sings in French. It is problem because I don't understand French.
Only I can do is preparing to learn about the life of Caravaggio. It is not light.
I saw two paintings in Paris with my husband and it was heavy.
At Hulencourt on 8 march.2012, he said he is still preparing the Opera Caravvagio.
It must be surprise for us. That is why this is so interesting. smile

"La course a l´abîme ¨ is not a biography, is a novel, Dominique Fernandez's vision is of Caravaggio.
And in this novel the painter is not a villain or a criminal. is above all a man puzzling.
For Caravaggio died violently means to live the love story more intense and deep between the murderer and the victim and that is your desire from the first to the last page of the novel. Being killed = the most extraordinary love story. Everything revolves around this idea.
It is a difficult character, but not a bad man (Felipe has already sung a perfect evil in "Líncoronazione di Poppea").

There exist also an very uncommon book " Il colore del sole" by Andrea Camilleri, an Caravaggio - novel, really interesting . It´s an crime story , apparently based on some " real" memoirs by Caravaggio himself. An exciting sight by " himself" on his work, his feeling for the colours and choice of models for his great pictures....

Thanks rikkapijemy, very nice blog of Alain Barré.
There are many biographies of Caravaggio and some are very interesting, but the opera is based on the last part of "La course a l´abîme" and the character has the characteristics that has given the author.
To understand the libretto of the opera, it's best to read this novel.

The film of Jarman hasn't relation to Fernandez. It's the great movie about an Artist and a Person in any time.

Great, Pilarddcc! I hope that many of us will be there. It is a lot of hard work for PhJ to learn this role, which is extremely difficult, as he told me when I met him in Neumarkt. So it will be great for him if there are many people in the audience who really appreciate the music and his work. The same probably goes for the other singers. And of course for the composer, who put years of intense focus, imagination and effort into this work. And unfortunately we don´t know whether it will ever be repeated. It is so difficult these days for everything that is not mainstream. So I think it is wonderful of each of you who will support all this by going to Metz!

rikkapijemy,

I think it´s just splendid of you and some others here to travel to Metz mainly to support PhJ! And I am sure he will really appreciate this very much. You are right, PhJ meanwhile is so famous that some critics just love to write negative reviews about him for no reason at all except that they can do it and feel more important when they criticise a famous musician. no The problem is that there are always some people who believe what they read. And I guess this opera will not exactly be easy listening, so - if there is an enthusiastic crowd clapping and cheering for the opera, that will undoubtedly be helpful. Now I really wish I could go...

I was there also and my culture is purely classic.
Caravaggio's paintings have always affected me and I had read "La course à l'abbîme " from Fernandez which I think is very important in understanding the opera
During the representation I found myself thinking that this music suited to a character if borrowing duality.
Music, I would have supported even more mixed linear least
We knew that Philippe is a very good actor; here even if it's a concert version, he excels and then what technical work, we say in French "he released his guts", .. away from the man we know sometimes reserverd.
We can not say it's beautiful; my ears were bruised a few times but how else to enter a character as tormented as Caravaggio
Anyway, I take you my hat off sir Jaroussky, both for the delivery technique for making body and soul with Caravaggio time an opera
I ask the question if this opera had written for somebody else it would have had the same success?
In short it was a great experience but lively baroque music

As it seems it is a very interesting project, I hope someone who was there will have pity on us and write a bit of a review here. From what I read elsewhere, it seems PhJ´s role was extremely difficult and taxing, very high and at the beginning having to sing loudly over the orchestra. I also heard that there as many large interval jumps in the recitatives. But I wonder about all the rest. There were choirs - does that mean a choir singing, ot ensemble pieces of the solist singers? Everything sounds very interesting. And of course, I would so like to hear whether PhJ seemed happy with it at the curtain call, and how the audience reacted.
